Chicago rings in Lunar New Year with music

Artists from the Shaanxi Province Song and Dance Theatre National Orchestra presented traditional Chinese music to a full house at the Chicago Symphony Center on Sunday.

The concert was part of the citywide Chinese New Year celebration and was joined by Chicago Symphony Orchestra concert master Robert Chen, with conductor Francesco Lecce-Chong leading the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, for an amazing rendering of the popular violin concerto Butterfly Lovers.

The Shaanxi orchestra is led by conductor Yan Songbo, and the performers included vocalists and musicians singing and performing on traditional wind, brass, percussion and plucked string instruments.

Consul General Hong Lei of the Chinese Consulate General in Chicago made the welcoming remarks at the concert, and Jeff Alexander, president of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, also was present.
