The 5,476-kilometer national highway 318 connects Huangpu, Shanghai, to Xigaze, Tibet autonomous region. Going through the Sichuan basin and the Tibet plateau, the section connecting Chengdu, Sichuan province, to Lhasa (more than 2,100 kilometers) was put into use in 1954 and named as the most beautiful and dangerous road in the world.
“Less than 20 percent of the cyclists are able to complete the Chengdu-Lhasa section,” said Boer, who owns an online store dedicated to cycling to Tibet via the highway.
A popular shop among cycling fans, Boer’s store has helped more than 30,000 cyclists travel to Tibet in 10 years.
Boer first started cycling to Lhasa from Chengdu via Chengdu-Lhasa highway about 10 years ago when he was in his early 30s. The travel tips he came up at that time, named “Bible to Tibet”, became an online hit, which led to the opening of Boer’s online store.
Boer’s travel tips to Tibet have garnered more than one million hits so far, and have been refreshed year by year after Boer’s annual trips to Tibet.
